You have all been such a valuable resource to me as my husband's surgery grows closer. 2/26/07 is the big day for his AVR. Still deciding on the valve. The comments regarding mech vs. tissue have been helpful but have made things more confusing at the same time! His cardiologist & surgeon both recommend a mech at his age (36yo). He thinks it's a reasonable choice to get the tissue valve & see what comes about in 15 years as a better option. The idea of being on ACT with a mech. is causing some anxiety. It's such a personal decision. Thank you for all the valuable info. ~ Shei

Welcome, Shei. I put your husband on the calendar for the 26th and I hope you will find more help and support here as the day comes closer. Valve choice is a personal one with the help of your surgeon and we like to say here that there are no "wrong" choices, but being fully informed is important and I hope that soon you will be less confused and more sure of your choice.

welcome to VR, Shei. We are glad you found us because there is so much information here. Just about 10 yrs worth now and all of it from valve replacement patients. I met a man recently who is in his 60s now. He did not have a mechanical because his dr said he was too young - don't know exactly how many yrs ago, but he is doing just fine. Gone into a new profession in his retirement yrs and doing very, very well.

It really should not. Make part of your education here learning about Coumadin. So many people (Just about every new person) that comes in here says the samething, but what they don't realize is that sometimes Afib is a problem after surgery and they'll be put on Coumadin anyhow. Please see www.warfarinfo.com and read all you can on ACT/Coumadin and then you'll have the truth to work with and not a bunch of hearsay from everyone, even the medical field.
