View Full Version : Help - broken tooth!

I bit down on a piece of candy and broke a piece off one of my molars today. It was already cracked due to a big filling, so the piece was just a thin area of enamel that had been covering about a quarter of the tooth, all above the gum. It didn't bleed and it doesn't really hurt much. I called the dentist and he can't see me until next Monday. Now I'm scared that I'm going to get an infection that could cause problems for my heart. What do you think? Should I try to get antibiotics? Call the dentist again and try to get in earlier? I called my cardiologist and he said he wasn't sure and that it would be better to talk to my dentist. Thanks, Kate

I seriously doubt that it'll cause infection.
But it wouldn't hurt to call the dentist and ask his opinion; you'll have to be covered by antibiotics for the appointment anyway; it sure wouldn't be hard to put you on a course of them until the appointment. If you'd uncovered the nerve, it wouldn't hurt just a little.

Calling your dentist might spur him to get you in sooner just to cover his posterior.

My teeth fall apart all the time. No you will not develope an infection and cause problems. Now if you couldn't get an appointment for say a month or two, then I might be a little concerned, but you'll make it to Monday with no trouble.

Thanks for the reassurance. My dentist aslo assured me that I wouldn't get an infection in a week but, happily, he had someone cancel today so I'm now typing with a temporary crown (well, actually typing with my fingers but you know what I mean :) ) and am much happier. Kate

I lost a rather big filling that I was freaking out about. I couldn't get in for month and well, I was freaking out worrying, so I know how you feel.
