Hi all,
My name is Rhonda I am a 33 year old mother to a 9 month old beautiful baby boy named Jason William. Jason has moderate AS and severe aortic insufficiency, and an enlarged and thickened left ventrilce, he is on Captopril 2mg 3 x aday. Jason was dx at 2 weeks of age with mild forms of each condition but has quickly progressed to more severe. He currently sees his Pediatric cardiologist on a monthly basis for the past 3 month. We recently went and had a second opinion done at U of M. Only because the family did not believe that he had such a serious condition, because to look at Jason all you see is a healthy 20# 4 oz active baby boy, though he sleeps much more that a "Normal " child he naps aprox. every 1 1/2 to 2 hrs because he tires so easy. Anyway what I am in search of is indications for the Ross-procedure. Both dr. told me he will have to have this surgery done. Jason regular pediatric cardiologist told me he could have th surgery from 1 moth to 2 years, our second opinion doc told us basicly the same thing except he mentioned that some doc would choose to do it now..SO Ok what is that indicates that it is time tho have the surgery. I am fightened by the current damage being done to his heart and also the possiblilty of sudden death, yet I am afraid of the surgery too. A mother form another support group had mentioned this site to me, she also mentioned things like pressure gradient and other terms to that sorts, which i honestly have no idea what they mean. Soo if any one knows what question I should be asking at our next PC appt. (may16th) I would be more than appriecative.
Thank you soo much for your input and time

Hi Rhonda,

Welcome to the site. There are a few Ross Procedure recipients here at VR.com, and hopefully they will be along to share their experience.

I had planned a Ross Procedure for myself (45 year old) and because of some dilation in my upper aorta, the surgeon and cardiologist thought the Ross wouldn't be my best option, and scratched the Ross a day before my surgery. I ended up with a bovine valve.

I can think of two questions right of the bat, that I would ask. The first would be "how many Ross Procedures have you done". The Ross procedure is a highly technical procedure that benefits greatly from having experience. This question makes sure your surgeon "has" experience, rather than "looking" for experience. Typically the number thrown around is "over 100", but many feel comfortable with 50-100. Some feel comfortable with less. This number isn't set in concrete, but the more they have done, the less surprises they will encounter. They have seen it before.

Another question I would ask would be "how long will the donor pulmonary valve last before another surgery is required". The new aortic valve will grow with Jason, but the donor pulmonary valve will not. It probably will need to be replaced at some point. Some surgeons take this into account. I would ask.

As to when to have the surgery I would have to say to trust the professionals you feel comfortable with. Once you find the surgeon you feel is the right one, trust what they say. Unfortunately, Jason is to young to tell you how he feels.

I would also suggest checking out the Ross Procedure list serve. They is some great information in the archives, located here
Ross Procedure List Archives (http://maelstrom.stjohns.edu/archives/ross-procedure.html)
Many of the participants are parents of young children just like Jason. There is a wealth of information there, specifically about the Ross Procedure.

I know what it was like to go through valve replacement myself, but can't imagine what it would be like to have a child go through it. You and Jason are in my thoughts and prayers.

hi rhonda!
i just responded to your post in heart talk. my husband, joey had his rp about 7 1/2 months ago.
i think chris gave you 2 great questions to ask the surgeon. the one about how many rp's he's done (also, make sure he's done them on children), and how long he thinks the rp will last before jason will have to undergo another surgery.
also, what kind of track record the surgeon has.
please feel free to email me directly at sigy827@aol.com
i have to run out to pick up my daughter right now, so i'm rushing...
you are in my thoughts and prayers.
stay positive and be well, sylvia

Sorry, I accidently replied to Rhonda elsewhere - maybe heart talk?
