Ok, every year I finish the More 1/2 marathon and as I cross the finish line vow to never run this stupid distance again. So, here's this year's results....
I finished the race.
That's the good part.
I finished it 30 minutes faster than last year. (another good thing)
Last year I walked it 3 months after OHS.
I wanted to do 11-12 minute miles this year and finish feeling good.
This year,I thought I would throw up and die on the way home.(Not such a good thing)
I finished it doing 13 minute miles which occured because at mile 8 my body said "you promised you'd never do this again;we are leaving!" This left me with just my brain and will to get me through the rest of the race. Luckily my brain is Irish and my will is Italian so we did it!
There are lots of variables which affected my race which I will not bore you guys with. Once again, we learn from our mistakes. I realize that I cannot cut corners anymore with training or race day (used to be able to power through and do fine, wow, what a kick in the head!)
I am not discouraged. My variable have nothing to do with the gift of OHS or a new valve;which allow me to continue racing in the first place. I guess I need to pay better attention to my training. I learned that real life sometimes gets in the way of a run or ride planned and race expectaions need to be adjusted accordingly.
It's funny; immediately after OHS I really was diligent about HR training and strict with all aspects of running/riding. As time went by I figured I was way better and didn't need to be so strict. Wrong!!!! What I learned is that 1 year later, you can not go back to doing more with less;you got to get by with giving more than before in training.
Don't worry Team ValveReplacement; I am back on track and recommitted to my orignal goal of a successful/healthy 2006 race season!!
It's 10:30 and I need to get to bed!!( I have to ride tomorrow!)

Hey Laura,
Haven't "seen" you in a while. Glad you were able to finish the race and the pace is nothing to be ashamed of. The big question (answer in 3 days) did you have fun?

Congratulations on the race!

Now go have fun on your ride tomorrow!

Hi Laura

"Character" always comes to mind when when I read your posts ;) Congrats on the finish. I admire a girl who can run until she blows chunks, whether aided by her genetic heritage or not. :)

So when does duathlon season come to your town? SOunds like you'll be ready!

Mtn Biker: I had fun on the bus ride there with all the other women who were running, I had fun for the first 6 mles. I think that's where the party ended!
I haven't told my body yet,but my brain knows were doing it again next year;but next year we'll be better prepared and will not let something like work get in the way!
Bill: Thanks; If I had known blowing chunks was so attractive I would have done it sooner! (I never did actually, I just felt like it)I cannot not wait for Du season, that is soooo mych more a do-able distance!
Good talking to you guys again! Hope your knee is better Billand Dave llet me know how that doctor's appt goes

Laura,

Congratulations on your half marathon! No matter how you slice it, completing it is a huge success.

I share your comments about trying to "power through" and going back to "success" being defined by "healthy" rather than speed.

Keep it up. :)

Congratulations! You are a gutsy lady. You're also a good writer; enjoy your humorous account of your big day. Best wishes.

Just back from vacation and saw your post - have some catch up to do on the site. Sorry the result wasn't what you wanted but you didn't quit and that's the sign of a true champion. Mark

Hey a half marathon is a half marathon and you completed it - your determination in doing so is inspirational. Congratulations.

I'm yet to draw up the courage to do distances like that - at least while wearing running shoes anyway!

Best you go and have your bowl of pasta washed down with a guiness to appease your multicultural body characteristics....:D

Well done
