I posted one about Barbara Dwyer another forum and it got me thinking about some other funny names - either real or imagined.

Suppose Heidi Fleiss married Joe Water and hyphenated her last name.

Yeah I got it, but it took me a bit because of how I was pronouncing her last name. It just didn't sink in to the tar pit. Trying to think of some others to add here. I've seen some good ones too.

Al - I told my husband the Heidi Fleiss one. He says it's a good thing you're such a great pharmacist/warfarin expert and don't have to rely on standup comedy to earn a living.:o :o :D

There was a kid named Richard Harry, who live down the street from my mom, when she was a kid. He went by Dick. I am not sure what kind of relationship he had with his parents, but if it was me I would make sure they went to a nursing home when they got old as payback for a lifetime of mental abuse for having such a name! Makes you wonder what people are thinking when they name their kids. Maybe his mom was still under the influence of drug from childbirth when she named him.

Check out names in obituaries -- real names are stranger than fiction.

When I worked in the newsroom, one of the city editors had a computer file with odd names. If we encountered an unusual name, we forwarded it to Lou.

Just look through a couple of days' worth of obits and you can start your very own chuckle file.

When I taught years ago, I had a student named Franklin Franklin.   Apparently the parents thought it was very clever.

We also know someone named Ken Kenny. Once again - what were parents thinking????

I think that often time parents-to-be get caught up with how the whole name sounds, including middle name, and they don't consider breaking it down to see if they like the shortened version. Kenneth Thomas Kenny sounds rather good doesn't it? Little do they know when they send Kenneth Thomas Kenny to Kindergarten, he's going to become Kenny Kenny.

I would also get a bit perturbed when a parent would send notes to school insisting that I put an end to the other kids calling their precious child by anything but their given name. "It's 'Michael' not 'Mike' or 'Mikey' !" The poor child would then spend so much time correcting kids on what his name was, and I could tell it was because the mother probably had many discussions with him about how his name wasn't 'Mike', it was 'Michael'.

Now I always wished my name had been spelled phonetically. So we chose names for my children that could easily be pronounced after reading it. Fortunately there was George Carlin to make it easy for my husband to remember my name. I answer to just about anything because it gets pretty tiring saying "No it's carlin, not carolyn.":o And then people always get embarrassed that they mispronounced it. To top it off, I had a very unusual maiden name. That's why I married someone with a very common last name.:D

We have our share of strange names over here too! I know a guy called Brian O'Brien...and another called Dermot McDermott ! Obviously the parents loved their surname so much they wanted to keep on using it :D

Our local veterinary practice has a vet called Mr J Russell....and yes... the J is for JACK !! Wonder if his name inspired him to work with animals

And confession time now...when we had new victims...oops....I mean new employees in the office, we used to give them the phone number of the local Zoo and have them ask for Mr C Lyons...or the number of the Dog Pound and ask for...yes you guessed it... Mr Jack Russell :D

My wife says that she was about 11 years old before she realized that her grandfather's first name was Ben. She thought it was his middle name because she never heard him referred to as anything but Thatdam Ben Martin.

There was a family around Moorhead, Iowa named Outhouse.

One of my college professors was named Brien O'Brien - from Australia.

I wonder if Jack Russel was slow at his work (tarried).

My mother claims that she knew a woman whose married name was Rhea Pollster.

I knew a lady named Felicia....she went by Flea. Her maiden name was Leach.

I know a man named Dusty Rhoades. His sister-in-law is Sandy Rhoades.

Also, if Olivia Newton-John had married John Denver she could have gone by Olivia Newton-John Denver. That looks like something from Wheel of Fortune.

This has been a fun thread to read. Thanks.

My first name is Lovejoy, yes it really it is. Growing up, my last name was Phelan pronounced "FEELIN" ! :D I'm sure I've heard every joke and crude comment there is. But I've always liked my name (the Lovejoy part). It gave me a very dry sense of humor.
I liked the name well enough that it is my daughters middle name.
You are all welcome to rty and come up with one I haven't heard.

A friend took a delivery to a woman named Anita Smoke.

One of my girlfriends had a baby boy and named him Justin, I made a joke by telling her to give him the middle name "Trouble" she laughed......now many years later we always think of how appropriate it would have been.......hahhaha!!!!

I had a student in my first grade class at the beginning of the year whose name was Diabolique which is french for devilish.
A long time ago, we had a little girl whose nickname was Brandi. Her mom remarried and the second husband adopted the girl. His last name was Rudolph.
The names parents give to their children always amazes me.

I used to work for a company that had a sales rep who thought it was funny to call in to new employees and say his name was Richard Head.
THEN - I actually met a person a few years ago with that very name. He was an older gentleman and I would find it unusual (and cruel) to name a child that in this day and age. However, 60 years ago, I don't think it was an issue.

One of my students was named Sunset. When people asked her how she got that name, she replied, " I was going to Dawn but I was 12 hours late."

How did I get the name Algha? It was my Dad's name and my grandfather's name. I guess my great-grandma couldn't write too well and was trying for Alpha but she got the stick on the wrong side of the 'p'. I guess she tried again because my grandfather had a younger sister named Alpha.

I fixed the problem by naming my son Matthew.

OK - I've stayed out of this because . . . well, my maiden name sucked and more than once I walked up on people I didn't know who were laughing at my name. Made me really thick-skinned, however; but you know how teenagers suffer.

My mother's name is Sunshine Fink. And she's 83, so her parents were WAY ahead of the flower children. And of course, she had to go marry a "Fink."

There is a doctor in Houston whose name is Dr. Butts. His specialty? Colon & Rectal Surgery, of course.

There was also a doctor in the town where I grew up whose name was Dr. Stork. He didn't quite deliver babies, but close enough, he was a Pediatrician.

Teaching school for 25 years, I had many, many strange student's names. The ones that really stick in my memories are 2 sets of twins. The first set was 2 boys named Pete and Repete..(honestly). Then the other set was a boy and a girl. Apparently, the mother assumed they had already been named by the nurses as they had cards on their cribs labled Male and Female- pronounced in school Moli and Femoli. Sad isn't it that these 4 children are now in their adult years with these names?:o

I had a teacher whose name after marrying was Anita Fuchs (actually pronounced Fox, but that's not what I see!) and a friend named Richard Peters (he went by Rick, but I called him Dick). There was a whole family near my hometown with the last name of Rape. You'd think they'd have it legally changed.

hi all,
we actually had neighbors named (maybe renamed) sage and sunshine rainbow...those were their real names. i think their kids' names were also nature oriented (sky?).
in any case, while on a trip out west one summer we read an article about these former hippie families or groups that were called the "rainbow family".
we assumed that they were once or still were part of this family.

i can't really complain, my maiden name is gruszecki... what were my parents thinking?!

be well all,
sylvia

Al, since I didn't know where to find the original post, just wondering if you know Barb Dwyer or is this just a name you came across. I taught with a Barb Dwyer for 3 years and never even thought about her name. Of course, she was just Barb when I was talking to her directly and Ms. Dwyer when I was talking to the kids, so I'm not sure I ever put it together.

My husband's name is Stephen Stephenson. Don't know what his parents were thinking. I guess they really liked the Stephen part of the name. Oh, by the way, our daughter's name is Stephanie. My husband chose that. She was our first and I think he thought he'd better have a name sake in case we didn't have a boy. Then we ended up with twin boys. I guess it worked out OK as we couldn't have named them both after him. They have normal names...Matt and Ben. LINDA
