My son asked me what would happen tonight if my heart rate got too high when exercising and I told him I didn't really know. This was during a discussion about why I can't go bike riding with him if they will have me ride a bike during cardiac rehab...for a 7 year old, he can be pretty switched on.

That's why you go to cardiac rehab -- it is staffed by nurses who closely monitor pulse and blood pressure.
Our daughter's non-exercise pulse was high after mitral valve repair. I don't remember for how long -- several months. The cardio and rehab nurses were not concerned.

They wouldn't let me go above 115 at the beginning of cardiac rehab, but since then I've hit 170 on occasion on my own from exercise (my repair was 12/22/04).

Your early into healing and your electrical system is not fully up to par. It would be fairly easy to set off afib on yourself with too much excercise. This is why it's important to be monitored.

gets too high? Is there a chance of a heart attack or something else if my heart rate gets too high?
Thanks in advance for your help.

I highly doubt that, but you could conceivably force yourself into Atrial Fibrilation and that is no fun.

I had my mitral repair on 11/18 and my surgeon said that they wanted me to work up to walking 2 miles as soon as I was released. He also said that I could ride my bike on the stationary trainer. I am now close to 8 weeks and was told by my cardiologist that I could ride on the road since I was up to 45 mins. on my stationary trainer and that I could also lift weights. I have found that my HR does not climb as fast since surgery. when I ride I have been taking it up to 145 bpm and maintaining for about 30-35 mins. I think alot depends on how well you are recovering, I have been fortunate to be a quick healer after having surgery. If you are an athlete you probably can sense when something is not right when you are exercising. Take it easy and work up and if something does not feel right then back off. Also, when I was doing my riding my wife was at home and she is an RN so I always had my personal nurse nearby.
Good Luck,
DLH
