Note: Mark and Paul Hobbs came up with an idea to get a bunch of valvers/OHS folks to get together and run a marathon relay. It started in another thread (2006 Fitness Resolutions). I moved it here to focus separately.
Mark, the end of May is not good for me - Austin Triathlon is that weekend. This certainly doesn't have to hinge around me. If you want to do VT, I'll catch up on the next one.
Or perhaps we could come up with several dates/locations and see what interest we get.
Perhaps we can have more than one team.
Any other takers?

Tom - I am not wedded to VT. I do share the excitement of getting 5 of us together sometime, somewhere to do the marathon relay. Let's go with the idea of looking at several dates/locations and see how far we get! Happy New Year!!

I'm looking to shed 30 lbs over the next year, at which point I will take up running again. But this might be an excuse to accelerate my timetable!

Great question, MitralMan! Lots of marathons offer relays for those that don't want to run the complete 26.2 miles. The concept is very popular.
Typically the distance is split into 3-5 segments with each participant running 1 or more segments. The "baton" pass is at official stations along the route. You sign up as a team and run as a team.
One of the team members starts with the rest of the field. The other team members are transported to the hand-off points. The last runner crosses the finish line. Official times are reported.
Sound like fun?:)

And feasible, too.
It's like running a 10K, give or take.
I wasn't ready to do a 5 miler this past October, but I'll keep reading these posts -- at the point at which I get to a 10:00 mile, I'll consider myself ready.

That's the spirit! I don't think we need to lock into any timetable. I do think it would be a great thing to get 5 people from this site to run a team marathon! Keep us posted on your interest!

I feel like I've been off line forever. Nice to be back. I am so in for the relay! (Mark: been doing your short, faster workouts and even though they killed me the first time, I find they do help my speed on overall runs)
I missed about 5 workouts over the last 3 weeks, but I am keeping up to speed with training and would love to run with you guys! This week is my one year anniversary and I am really just beginning to feel like I might have a chance to get back to 9 minute miles one day.

If you guys would let a slow turtle run with you, I would love to come out and play!!!! I've done quite a few 10 mile runs, but not fast. My heart valves are growing quite old even through I'm only 29. I've done the broad street run in philly, in 04 and 05 (it's a very flat and fast). I try to run at least one 5k race a month, but right now it's more like 2 or 3 a month. What can I say I love just finishing a race and who doesn't need another t-shirt!!!!! I've done many 5 milers and 10k's as well. My last 10 mile race was the first sunday in November 05.
I finished it in just under 1hr and 52min. For me that was very good, it was flat but the hill we ran down mile 2 was the hill we ran up mile 8.
But I never stopped running, I kept a good pace and felt some what ok (if there is such a thing) after the race.
Keep me in mind, I really want to run a marathon the full fun of 26.2 miles is my goal. But I'm not allowed, so this would be the next best thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Laura - Happy New Year! and one year - wow! Glad the faster workouts are helping! I think we have 5 to 10 people on this site that could do a marathon relay including all those that responded here - we will get there - just a question of organization and logistics. Mark

Thanks Mark for kicking this off!! My wife Michelle and I (and Sam the dog!!) did a Jan 1st 5K here in Burlington Vermont and I was thinking about all the conversations I have had with Mark about running and training and being patient with recovery and thought it would be great to run with him and other OHS people. I am interested in running with others and it doesn't have to be Vermont, HOWEVER, I can vouch for the event and the course and the area and the state. And I can take the lead and help organize if it works out that we can run here. It's a great place and a great event. VERY friendly!
Typically the relay is great because it lets many more locals get involved and with that local interest comes the local support. My wife ran the Chicago marathon and that was phenomenal with 100,000 spectators and +20,000 runners, but for an event like ours the the relay really builds the local interest.
http://www.runvermont.org/marathon/rregister.html
This is the web site for more information. As you can see we need to put in a bid for a relay team (or two!!) and all teams are 'drawn from a hat' because of so much demand for a team. I plan on submitting a bid for a team regardless of what happens with this OHS team idea. I don't know if I can put in two, and I don't know the odds of getting one let alone two.
Again, let me say, I am not pushing that hard for the VT race, but it seems to me to make sense to do a race near one of the participants so there is some knowledge of the location and maybe even the ins and outs of the event. I would be more then happy to take the lead, at least until we pick an event. So, to start with, anyone interested, just interested, in meeting somewhere for some event where 5 or 10 of us would each run roughly 5 to 6 miles; send me an e-mail directly. Please express interest or opinions or suggestions on the web site (or to me or Mark directly as you choose); but I think an email directly to me would be a good place to start so I can get an idea of how many people are really interested.
Mark has been in contact with other outlets for HV or OHS or Congenital Heart Disease people to communicate and I will talk to him about throwing a bit larger net. This could really be great!! Happy New Year!!
P.S. As far as speed goes, it doesn’t matter to me one bit! I have my own pace goal but each member's goals are their own. I was thinking the team would be 2004 or 2005 patients so that we are all in recent recovery, however if your surgery was earlier and you want to run please don’t retract your self.

Subject to my wife's blessing, I will come to Vermont Memorial Day Weekend 2006 to do 1/5 of the team relay. From my networking, I know how important it is that we raise the visibility of adult congenital heart disease plus I would very much enjoy the camaradie etc. I get all kinds of running magazines and when I get the time, I can look into other marathons offering relays and put the word out for suggestions. Do we have 3 other takers for Vermont as Paul proposes or should we look for a different event?

Hey guys: Memorial day is May right? I'd say that's a go for me. Do we have to sign up now or is there generally room? Vermont would be so wonderful;close enough and certainly a beautiful spot. For someone who doesn't like running(at least not as much as cycling) I'm sure doing alot of it lately.
Mitral Man:Yes, one year ago today I was in that giant post surgical cardiac room with my own nurse at the foot of my bed surrounded by about a dozen other OHS patients in similar states. As I recall, right about now my nurse was telling me to cut out the nonsense and consent to having morphine. I was still trying to grasp how freakin' bad I felt, but I was still kickin because I was told I asked the physican assistant who removed my chest tube for a date. (he was very handsome....I think) Anyway, I feel better all the time and it definately takes at least a year to feel that you've maybe returned, wouldn't you agree? Congrats on your Christmas anniversary!

Hi Laura,
The date is May 28th. The Sunday before Memorial Day on Monday May 29th. I will be submitting a bid for one team. All teams will be selected at random from the bids and the accepted teams will be notified on Feb 6th at 9:00.
I look at my bike every time I do a load of laundry, it is sooo lonely... :( But running, elliptical-trainering and cross counry skiing are more interesting then the stationary trainer at this point in the winter, maybe we can do a ride after the run.

I just want to reiterate that we are not committed to VT on May 28th by any means.
I want to meet people and talk and learn from others. I will probably not have a problem finding locals to run the relay here in VT if we can get more participation some where else on some other date.
So i really don't want to eliminate the possablity of meeting and running with Tom or Mitralman or anyone else at this point.

I appreciate your flexibility, but with 3 on board for VT 5/28, if you can find 2 more, then I say go for it. I'm tickled to see the response.
Once the VT team is settled, we can look for another opportunity. These things are everywhere!

Count me in. I just want people to know that I had my surgery in 1990, so I'm a little rusty so to speak. My next appointment is in March. I have a 5K race tomorrow (Sunday Jan 8th) and I'll 5k races in Feb and March ( I have 2 in March) as well.
I plan on running a 10 miler on April 1st and another the 1st sunday in May. I run these races regardless of the out come of the relay. I know that most of you have just had surgery or had it in the last 2 or 3 years.
I'm 29 ( I turn 30 on Feb 25th ), but I don't have the heart of a 30yr old. I want so very much to run a marathon. I will run one some day. But right now I do what I can, the best that I can. My heart might be weak, but I have no control of that. I will run the best I can I can promise that.
Let me know if it 's a go.

Hey everbody - I spoke with Paul yesterday and we find out on 2/6 whether our bid for a 5 person team will be accepted. With Laura, Christine, Paul and me, we still need one more! If this falls through, here's another opportunity - Sat., 9/30 in Akron Ohio (my neck of the woods). But as Tom says - these things are everywhere. Laura - doing my first long run of the year tomorrow -7 miles and I will run it deliberately slow (11:00 min. miles). I am very encouraged by increased stamina this week - it's interesting how each month we get stronger and stronger! http://www.akronmarathon.org/

We are already up to 5! Cool! I am so exceited i went to the Y and ran way to far last night.
So, we have 5 people tentative for VT, and Mark has posted a link to the Akron race in September either as a fall back or our primary event if 10 people are interested in running near Mark's home.
I am still curious to know how many people are interested in doing a Marathon Relay, even if VT or even 2006 is not possible.
So to recap the situation with VT:
I am submitting a bid for a relay entry. The bids are chosen at random and will be anounced on Feb 6th at 9:00. I will contact the four of you who have said you are in with some more infomation and ideas. You can review the web site too. Note that the first leg is short and could go to Mitralman if you are really concerned about the length.

Again, i am very excited to meet some of you and do a run together! Cross your fingers that we get in. I will also talk to the promotor who is a friend of a friend to see if they have special spots for special teams like ours, especially if we try to do some type of PR work. I doubt it though.

I would be interested in this too. My longterm vision is that we actually form a group affiliated with this site and perhaps the Adult Congenital Heart Association where people of all types of athletic ability and ACHD can meet and support each other and raise money/visibility for our cause. I forsee some ability to talk this through over the next six months as we meet in Indianpolis for the Indy half marathon and now potentially in Vermont. Small steps lead to big change and there is so much to do in a positive way to help all of us lead the most productive lives possible despite our conditions!

Using Polar's Running Coach to do a month of simple acclimation before I key in a new program specifically for the relay.
For the record, I didn't go above 4.5mph today, but still managed to get my HR up to 130.
On the other hand, I felt totally fine -- I'm just doing it by the book, slow and easy to start.
Also for the record, I'm starting at a weight of 194, down from my 211 the day I got home from recovery. Target weight for May 28 is 175.
Finally, for the record, my target pace is 12:00. I know how slow that is, but it's faster than what I'm doing now!
How else am I going to achieve these goals without publicly, loudly humliating myself into it?? :)

You've got me thinking about the Broad Street Run, but if I do it, it'll probably be next year.
Polar Coach says do a "long run" tomorrow, 40 minutes, 4.2mi, target zones 1 & 2. I guess I'll do the 40 minutes, but come in short on the distance since target zone 2 for me is not above 120bpm.

The Broad Street Run is great. It is flat and fast and it has about 11,000 runners (give or take 1,000). I've done it two years in a row.
It is the 2nd biggest 10miler in the USA. Some people walk it, I'm not the fastest but last year I finished in 1hr and 59 mins. That was race time and not chip time (chip time was more like 1hr and 50min).
It's not an out and back run so you just go the whole street. They have different hight school drum corps playing and the mummer's were there last year.
I think it is a great race. I'm not allowed to run a marathon but because this race is so large I get the same feeling.
It's great fun.

Your doing great, I didn't start running until 4 years ago and I had my open heart in 1990. I used to say the only way I would get up at 6am and run was - If my house was on fire and I had to run out of it.

Well Team, Monday we know if we are in luck. I will post here at 9:05 Monday Morning!! Keep your fingers crossed!
Are we all still on board? I have been sick since the 14th (currently on atibiotics with my 8 month old) and have to admit to loosing some enthusiasm. We can look to Mark for re-motivation!! I have never found him short of enthusiasm. However, no one should feel any hesitation to back out if necessary. We should all be excited about this as it will take some work and expense to put togher, not to mention the effort to train.
So, Monday I will post the results here. If we get in, I will send a direct e-mail to all who have tentatively signed up sometime during the day so that we can start to communicate directly.

Well, we are in luck! I got an e-mail around 8:30 thismorning! My wife's team got their's Saturday so I was really bummed out. However, it came through!!
I am having a very busy day and can't do too much right now, but we are in and can start talking directly about housing and transportation.
Mark and I will talk soon and discuss how we can use this run.

Why don't you post it on the Calendar? It will be a nice change to see members running a marathon relay rather than undergoing surgery!:p :p

Done - a small step forward to continued health and discovery of what we can safely do with adult congenital heart disease. Hopefully, there will be future marathon relay teams filled with people of all types, whether walkers or serious runners. Thanks for the suggestion. Mark

Team: We have been contacted by the Adult Congenital Heart Association who wants to run a story about our Vermont relay team. We are entered as the Valve-Replacement.Com Team. Sounds like a great opportunity to promote the website? Do we have a logo? Thoughts on the design of the tshirts? I will post a new thread about to see what others have done for previous events.

They've done four corporate logos for me, and they've been terrific.
I explained who we are and what we're trying to accomplish, and asked if they'd like to donate a logo design to the cause. I should hear back from them later today. You can see what they do at www.logoworks.com. I think they're good people, and I think they're going to come through for us.

Just currious... I understand the goal here is not to compete with the Kenyans, but what is your target time or expectations? I have high hopes for this group!! You are carrying the banner and dreams of those of us who are not yet able to join your ranks. BOOK ME FOR NEXT YEAR I WILL BE ON THE MEND SOON.

Kenyons?? Right now I hope to maybe just view dusty footprints of folk that fast as I tread on behind them. I think it all depends on what leg of the race each of us chooses or is assigned. The unfortunate 2 who get the hills will probably be happy to thank their lucky Toporol they are keeping 11 minute miles(Speaking for myself) The person who gets that beautiful last decline leg has no excuse!

More 1/2 marathon in Central park just a little over two training weeks away...

Just thought I would let you guys know that I will be interested next year if all goes well. I'm only three weeks postop right now and currently doing twenty minute miles :p so this year would be pushing it.
Two years ago I was running eight minute miles and will be again if I have any say in the matter.
It sounds like great fun.

Mark has already penciled in Akron 2007 and thinks we could have TWO teams. From the response and more central location I have no doubt he is right.
We have specifically not discussed pace so that everyone who was interested would feel free and comfortable to join in. However, maybe next year if there are two team we could divide up by pace. Just an idea for the future.
Boy do i remember the 20:00 days. And the DEEP naps following, along with the chills, back pain and throbing head...those were the days. :) But it passes, for me after about 5 weeks.
FYI, I have been keeping a Word Document of all the user names who expressed interest or support for this think. When the next one comes up, be it 2007 in Akron or sooner, we will send out a little notice.

I have a lot of questions:
What is the name of the race?
When is the race?
Who is on the team?
Will times and splits be posted in real time? after the race? If so where can we find this info?
You guys have a lot of us watching, cheering you on and dreaming that we too one day will be out there.....HAVE FUN!!!! and give us all the details after the race.
Has there been any movement on non-cotton shirts??
How long after AVR can I run? Perhaps next day? My AVR will be done as out-patient surgery under local anesthesia............(you have to dream)

Hi Philip,
I am not sure if we will post times, we will need to discuss it, it could be good for people to see, but it also doesn't really matter that much as we are all so different, recovering valvers or not.
The race is the Vermont City Marathon on May 28th.
The team is:
Paul
msiwik
mitralman
ChristineBP

We have been moving forward wtih Hank's review and approval, on non-cotton shirts. What is in the works is an order of 18 to 24. We will each buy one or two for our selves, the remaining available for purchase by any registered VR.com-er, then the remaining would be paid for by the team and given to Hank (with our appriciation) to be done with as he sees fit, such as raffle or such at the reunion or curise.
This is all still in the works. I will be starting a thread soliciting interest in buying a shirt so we can get an idea of how many to order. I will also contact through the web site all the folks who have already expressed initerest. Our latest estimate is $32/shirt for a synthetic shirt with two or more colors on the front and back and it would not be VT City Marathon specific but would be run specific, something like: Valve Replacement.com Marathon Team, or Valvolines or something fun, using Hank's basic logo you see above. My wife is a profesional Graphic Designer and will make it look sharp, but without much fluff. www.bleuskycreative.com
We have received interest from several heart related orgonizations as well as the Marathon its self. Mark has put together a 'team bio sheet' that he will send to the appropriate groups and he will be talking with them as needed. I want to also contact our local newspaper and our local Cardiac Rehab.
I think this is really getting exciting and we have every intention of continuing this in future years with hopefully many more VR.com-ers running. it would have been great to have 10 runners here this year, but just orgonizing this has been a little bit of work and there is still effort to be put forth with general PR.
I personally very much appreicate all the possitive comments that have been posted here and on the Tshirts thread. This all started when my wife and i ran and very much enjoyed the Jan 1st 5k and i though how great it would be to use the Relay to meet some of you.

Boy I hadn't checked this thread in a bit and am delighted to see the continued interest and to think this all started with a brainstorm of Hank's to put together a website.....What was the Field of Dreams quip - "Build it and they will come?"

Total team times (not split times or individual relay leg times) for these events are typically posted on a website and are avaible to everyone see. the team name and individual's names are listed.
