View Full Version : Wife leaving to get guide dog

Cindy is leaving out of Louisville in the morning at 8:00 on her trek to San Rafael, California. She's going to Guide Dogs for the Blind where she will meet her new guide dog (a golden retreiver). She and he will train together for two or three weeks. It has been eleven years since she has actually worked a dog, but she's hoping that she'll only have to stay two weeks.
Please pray for her to have a safe trip to San Francisco. She's stopping first in Chicago.
She's excited and I am also. I will miss her much. I may be the one who needs the prayer most. So, thanks for your prayers for her safety and that she'll have a great time there.

Morning Wise, I was wondering how Cindy was doing and I'm very happy that she'll finally get a dog in time for the festive season. What a wonderful present!! I'm sure she'll do just fine!! By the way, she hasn't written to me for a long time now, but I hope that once she's back home and setteled with the new dog, we can continue to correspond. She's such a nice and admirable person! Have you already chosen a name for the dog? Say hello to her for me next time you talk to her and of course I'll keep both of you in my prayers! How's your heart doing? Take care and get in touch.

Hi Debora. I've had a hard time getting Cindy to the computer. Anyway, I'll tell her you asked about her. Now it'll be a while before she can respond since she's gone now. Her plane was about 1 hour and 20 minutes late leaving this morning. I never stared at a motionless airplane for so long. She doesn't know the dog's name yet. That's a policy with the school to not tell the dog's name until the student it and the student meet. She will meet her dog Monday. Thanks for the prayers...she was calmer about the whole deal than me and her 81 year old mother. We'll be okay though. As far as my heart I'm fine. Have my next checkup in January and probably another stress test and echo in May. It's all routine after you've done it a few times. Thanks for asking.

This is great news and I am sure you and Cindy will both be fine. Golden Retrievers are such wonderful dogs and make terrific family members.
I will pray that she gets home soon and you will not be too lonely.

Thanks so much for your prayers and kind words.
Cindy has arrived in San Francisco, although two hours late. But, she has been connected with the people from the school, has been given a diet pepsi and a sandwich and they are on their way to the school.
When she gets home with the new family member, we will post pics.
Thanks again.

Wise - That's really exciting!
My wife and I just returned from a week-long trip to the San Francisco area, and we stayed in San Rafael. During our stay we saw several dogs-in-training, out with their trainers. This was such a heart-warming sight that it truly made the trip a great experience. The dogs are so. . . dignified, yet their love and devotion is unconditional. We humans can learn so much from our four-legged siblings, can't we?
Congratulations on the new addition! Please, do remember to post those pictures.

Cool! My wife will flip that a vr.com member was just in San Rafael. Sounds like you had a good time. Yes, we can learn much from our "four-legged siblings" (You've coined a new term? I like it). Will definitely post pictures.

Wise:
One of the reporters at the newspaper where I work got her dog from Guide Dogs several years ago. He's a Golden Retriever. He goes with her on all her assignments, sits at her desk when she writes her stories, etc.
Don't know if Liz still skis with Bates on tiny skis beside her. :D She used to go to a special ski place near Boulder CO for challenged people, but I'm not sure if she still skis.

I'll read all of this to Cindy when she calls later tonight...she'll love it. A reporter!...her eyewitness would be her dog huh? Cindy's brother, who is blind also, has been skiing...but, I don't remember hearing about his dog skiing. That is awesome.

I'm a fraidy cat of bad roads...so we'll see...I know I haven't made reservations, but just don't know yet. The weather isn't the only consideration, but a big one. It would be a lot of fun and you guys could meet Cindy's new guide dog
BTW, everyone, the dog's name is Perry. The school names them, but Cindy's happy with it. I laughed when I heard his name because Perry is my stepfather's name. Visits to my parents house will be confusing to us and the dog.

Wise, you'll have to be "extra careful" to avoid name confusion here at vr.com, as we have a member named Perry (PerryA). He hasn't been very active lately, but when I first joined, he was one of the most active folks.
Yes, San Rafael is beautiful -- in the conventional, visible way and in the way of some of the great things that are going on there. Can't wait to "see" Perry!

Yes, I think a lot of people are taken aback when they hear about a blind reporter or writer. BC (Before computers), it would have been difficult, if not impossible, to be a writer, even with Braille typewriters. Hi-tech devices make it much easier. I'm sure your wife has some of these.

Marsha,
Welllll.....She's got it on her computer at work, but they've been to sorry to train her...no one has taken the ball and run with it so to speak...it has been months that the computer has just sat there unused with the adaptive software installed. So, she is aware of it, but even so the lady you work with sounds like she must be quiet a person. They are brave souls who will ski without sight, even if they do have a sighted furry friend.

Maybe this Thursday or Friday. All of the students are being photographed with their dogs. They were told that someone from admissions may be able to help them scan the photos...so, I hope they'll email it me and I can post it (I posting it being the biggy). I'll let you know

Well, now I know that it will be a while before I can post pictures of Perry. Cindy was told they would receive their pictures the last week of school. So, even if she leaves early (fingers crossed), it looks like it'll be the week after next before the school has the pictures. So, I'll post them when we can get them.
BTW, she is having a ball at school...she loves being away from work, any work for that matter, and she's having fun to boot. She is quite smitten with Perry. Their training is going well. The trainers are helping her and Perry work out their kinks. He responds well to correction and, from what she says, catches on pretty guick to what they want him to do. He has tended to anticipate what she's going to do...which can be a problem in that just because they've always turned left at a certain intersection doesn't mean that's what she wants him to do the next time. He has resisted slightly some of her commands because he already knows what to do, he thinks. Anyway, thanks for listening...

I'm glad to hear Cindy and Perry are getting along so well. My sister used to volunteer with Paws for a cause and would get so attached that it would sometimes be hard to let the dogs leave. Every animal has its own personality and it seems like Cindy has one that fits with hers. Keep us updated!

We've seen some of the Paws for a Cause (Paws something) dogs and their raisers at church. One lady was getting ready to turn her dog over to be trained as a service animal; we could tell it was hard for her. That's why I couldn't do that. I greatly admire those who can.

Well, now that is an interesting idea, but then I have been the guide dog for quite a while now.
Also, Cindy just told me she expects they'll stay the whole three weeks. Bad for me, but it may be the best thing for them. We'll see.

I'll happily wait to see the pictures -- it sounds like it is for all the right reasons. Is there any chance that Cindy can get a picture that includes Perry's trainer? It would be interesting to see if Perry is one of the fellows we saw working with their trainers while we were in San Rafael.
In any case, you must feel like a new dad, waiting for mom and the baby to come home from a long delivery.
Just miles of smiles out here!

Yes, Steve, I do feel like an expectant dad. I will ask about a picture of the trainer. As far as Perry goes, what I know is that he's a deep gold color with a bit of red; my has been told by several people that he could be a poster dog for Golden Retrievers. He sounds like a beautiful representative of his breed.

Here's a picture of my wife's class. Of course, Perry is obvious since he's the only Golden. The lady on the right side of the photo is Cindy's trainer. The lady next to her is one of favorite new friends; she's from Boston. The next lady with the light colored shirt is Lori, her roommate; she's from Nevada. I'm supposed to get a picture just of Cindy & Perry, but I got two of this one...so, when I get the other one I'll post it too.

Perry is 19 months old. Cindy told me that they are generally 18 to 22 months old, give or take. They are trained for their first year in basic obedience (maybe a little more advanced?) by their puppy trainer, with whom they live. The for the next few months they are trained at the school before. Then they're matched with their owners and go through the training happening now.

I agree with your assessment. Perry is all business. The labs are all goofy and ,like you say, ready to play ball.
We won't be doing the Christmas get-together after all. Cindy's plans can't be changed to accomodate that. She thought she'd be able to cancel the last leg of your flight home and then ride home with me. But, we'd have to pay over $200 for that change. Guide Dogs for the Blind has already paid for everything including the airfare. So, we think that's fair. They've been so good to Cindy and her classmates...I mean tonight she said they fed her the best prime rib she's ever had.
To Mary: I really do like you friend. I hope I didn't come across as anal retentive (or whatever that is) in clarifying labs and goldens. I am a nerd after all...always was...always will be. :)

How is it going for Cindy and Perry?
That training at the guide dog school is HARD work. There is so much for the student to learn. Cindy will develop a wonderful bond with Perry.
I am sitting here with tears. We are puppyraisers for Guide Dogs of America in Sylmar,CA.
Are you going to graduation. It is an emotional time -- take your tissue.
I hope Cindy keeps in touch with Perry's puppyraiser as it will mean so much to the puppyraiser. It doesn't have to be frequent communication, but a few words/photos a few times a year will be appreciated.
CONGRATULATIONS Cindy!

Thanks so much Mindy. Cindy will appreciate your comments and suggestions very much. It is going very well for Cindy & Perry. She had hoped to leave early, but won't be the case. She graduates Saturday the 17th and comes home on the 18th. I can't attend the graduation, but I'm sure Cindy will need the tissue. She's already beginning to miss her new friends before she leaves, if that makes sense. I believe that Cindy will be very happy to stay in contact with her puppy raiser.
Also, Mindy, as the husband of a guide dog owner, I want to personally thank you for the service you provide to the many people touched by the life of each puppy you trained, nurtured, and loved. You are one my heroes.

Need I say more?
Mary, YES I remember this picture.
NO you need not say more!!
My wife is responsible for all of this anyway...she's the one who went to San Francisco and left me to get into this kind of trouble.
Now, are we back to behaving?
I didn't think so.

Thanks to one my attached at the hip vr moms, Bonnie:
Cindy does call me everyday; some more than others. She is still taking care of me from that distance if that's possible. I have my cell phone with me all the time.
Concerning Perry. He will be a working dog when he is in his harness, but when he's "unclothed" he will be just a dog...and from the way I hear him playing with Cindy on the phone, he'll be quite a family dog. When he is in harness, no one is allowed to pet him (universal guide dog rule). This helps keep him from being distracted and becoming a sloppy guide dog. During his first six weeks at home, he will be on "tie-down" which is on a leash (I haven't seen this yet), but a special leash with which he is still in work mode. He won't be allowed to be a pet to me during that time. Of course there will be times when Cindy will take his gear off of him for those of us close to her to able to officially meet him and pet him. She will be the one taking him out to wee-wee. She will also take him to work and will have to take him outside there to relieve himself and then she'll have to dispose of his "stuff". So, I'll have to help her scope out good places at her building to do that. Her bosses are on alert to help keep the office in professional mode regarding Perry...and not sneak up and pet him on the sly. That will be hard for some of them.
As far as being in the doghouse, I am already am with our two yorkies and one bichon frise (plus two cats). Perry has no idea what he's in for. The school knows everything about our pets and Perry was matched to her with that in mind. Golden Retrievers are naturally laid back. For the first six weeks also, our other pets will not be loose around him all the time. The will be on supervised visitations...one at a time in the beginning.
Sorry for such a long answer. If there is a long way to say something or do something, I'm the one who'll find it.

I didn't know about your other 3 dogs and 2 cats. .Sounds like a lot of adjusting to me...Good luck...:D I don't worry about your 3 small dogs..but, the cats???..I have a small dog, a Papillon..My 2 cats keep him under control.:p They love to chase him, ect. in house. He's such a wimp..will jump on my lap for protection.:D ..However, when I bring my Granddog home (for a visit, his Mom/Dad work all the time)they sit on kitchen counter and stare at him..:p He is an over-weight..King Charles spaniel.....they don't know his bark is worse than his bite.:D No way, he could chase them..Too fat.:D ..They do love when he comes for a visit...Just the challenge of thinking..Can we get him?:D .......Actually, after only an hour home (Reggie) they are fine.Animals know who they can trust. I'm sure that Perry and all others will be fine after a few days.:) ....Bonnie

Wise, I'm so excited!
When my wife and I were in San Rafael, the guide dog we saw in training was a beautiful Golden! Could it have been Perry? Do you know if Perry would have been the only Golden in training, working with his trainer (a dark-haired lady) in downtown San Rafael around November 10th or 11th? If that WAS Perry, Cindy is SO lucky! He is just as handsome as they come, and seemed so dignified and capable.
This is SO cool!

Steve, I do believe that Perry is the only golden in this group. That should have been him that you saw during that time period. Cindy will be excited to hear you saw her "baby" as I've heard her call him. So, does he look like the poster-dog for goldens? That's what Cindy has been told. The vet that checked out all of the dogs last week told her that Perry is stunning. Quite a compliment, from a vet nonetheless. I can't wait to see him.

I love golden retrievers! When my children were still in school we became attached to the breed. We had one that would walk to the bus stop with our youngest son in the morning and head that way to meet him a little before the bus was expected to return. He was so gentle and faithful. Since that time we have had 3 other goldens and have never been dissappointed. My youngest son has an aging golden now and it is the only golden in our family that ever bit anyone. When our grandson was but a toddler he was playing tug with the dog with a cowboy hat and having a great time. Dakota must have walked to his dish and got involved with eating his food. Our grandson must have decided to continue the game and, as close as the unwitnessed event can be reconstructed, was putting the hat on Dakota's head and planning to tie it under his chin. The result was a nasty bite to Cole's face including part of his eyelid that required several stiches to close. He also had some pucture wounds in his hairline. We all think Dakota must have been going for the cowboy hat but of course no one knows. In the years before or since there has never even a growl. It was a good lesson though that a dog is still a dog no matter how perfect they seem. Enjoy Perry and I hope he soon becomes a happy well-adjusted member of your family. I am so happy for all of you.

Just wanted to say a great big THANK YOU to all you for your prayers and support for me and Cindy. She has done very well being gone for so long. The end is in sight!! She and Perry will arrive in Louisville at 4:45 Sunday afternoon and I am very excited about that.
I won't be posting anymore pictures until after Cindy returns. I still haven't gotten an email with the picture of just Cindy & Perry...will send when we have it.
Steve, Cindy asked about the golden that would have been training at the time you were in San Rafael...as far as her trainers can tell, it should have been Perry that you saw. His trainer during that time period had dark brown hair and there just aren't any other goldens currently in classes. So, we think it is so cool that you actually got to see Cindy's guide dog.
Again, thanks for supporting me and keeping me entertained...as is always the case here at vr.com.

I asked Cindy if she'd met Christine. She's not aware of a Christine being there, but she could be training in the first-timers class, but Cindy's doesn't think so. She has met a Kristin though.
We will definitely post about Cindy & Perry's progress.
She was told yesterday that Perry is "one in a million". They did a particular training to simulate the dogs' ability to guide their owner past low hanging objects, such as tree branches. The trainers said that Perry was the best they had ever seen at that exercise. I think she's overwhelmed with the wonderful creature she has the privilege of allowing to be her guide.

Cindy turned 50 today! We didn't know months ago that she'd be in San Rafael at school on her birthday...but she's fine with that. We'll celebrate after she gets home. I'm having delivered to her today some chocolates that are made locally in San Rafael...don't remember their brand name...a florist is buying them and delivering them. She'll kill me probably for providing the temptation, but she deserves a treat. I also know that her daughter Jessica and grandson Jackson (3 yrs old) made her some oatmeal cookies (and something else Jackson made..at school?) and overnighted them to her. She'll have some goodies to snack on Sunday when she's travelling.
Even though she's not home for her special day, what a birthday present she already has!!

Thanks for the warm replies. Perry definitely is a special dog..and for a special person. He certainly is alert and intelligent and handsome and gentle and kind...and nosy, so Cindy says. Yes, he also looks after Cindy very well. Sometimes when I'm observing them walking I will think he's made a mistake, but usually he is letting Cindy know that he's not sure exactly where she wants him to go, so he will pull up to the point in question and let her decide, i.e., in the building she works there is a turn where on the left is a corner that sticks out...on the right the wall zig-zags (weird description, but true). Perry pulled up to a corner in the zig-zag and let her tell him to go forward so he'd be sure...it probably looks like a good place to turn left to him. Anyway, he's brilliant, of course.
When I take some photos of my own, I'll post some more over in Karlynn's thread for animal pics....because I hope some more of you do too.
To all of you who have shared Cindy and Perry's journey so far...many thanks for your love that showed through.

The other furbabies are doing fine. Our small dogs like him, but are warming up slowly. Our cats like him, one from a distance, the other one up close and personal - he likes to weave around his legs and walk under him and rub against him - he'll probably be curled up with him before too long.

Yes, Mindy, I'm very proud of her. She is very good with him; they make a great team. Also, Perry continues to amaze me. Example: we went to the Christmas service at our church. Being a mega church it has large parking lots. So, we parked a ways from the building being that the handicapped parking was all taken. I looked around to remember where our car was. At the end of our row was a perpendicular row of cars in handicapped parking; we went between a purple van and a truck, then proceeded down steps and still a little ways to the church. So, when we came back to the car we were trying to figure out about where to turn when suddenly Perry stopped. He had positioned us to turn between the same purple van and truck. So, I said, "Well, I think Perry knows where we're supposed to turn." We couldn't believe he remembered that.

Danny, he is definitely "at home" here. He repeated himself last Sunday in the parking lot but this time there were different cars in the spot he stopped at than when we first got there, but we went with him and sure enough it was the row our car was in. Smarty pants. He has disentery (?) probably from drinking from a yucky mud puddle...I had to get up twice and clean up a mess during the night, besides the extra trips outside during the night. We're tired. He seems to be getting better after starting his meds this morning.
