 This is my first time here and my husband had his Mitrel Valve repaired back in April 2005. Since his surgery he has had horrible migraines, this started out slowly, not to many at first but in the last couple of months they have been weekly and sometimes daily. If anyone has any type of information regarding this being some sort of side effect of open heart surgery or valve repair any feed back would be greatly appreciated. He is no longer on any medication, except for his blood pressure and thyroid, and these were taken for years before the surgery. My teenage son also had open heart surgery back in November of 2004 and we see no side effects in him headaches or migarines so we are wondering if this is a valve replacement/repair issue, and if it is common. If any one can help that would be wonderful. Thank you.

Welcome.
Migraines are very common after OHS. I have had migraines since I was 9 but they got worse after my MVR. I found they did taper off eventually but I am not sure if that wasn't just because I was getting older (apparently migraines can decrease with age). Some people who never had migraines start getting them after OHS.
Please have them properly diagnosed (if you haven't) just to rule out other possibilities. Also, do a search on this website under "migraines" and you will find a lot of information.
Good luck.

Thank you for your response,
My husband only had a couple since I have known him prior to surgery and since then they have definitely esculated. I am making an appointment to have him check out this week. Thank you for your help I will keep you posted it just worries me, I am wondering if this is linked to the repair of a valve my oldest son (16) hasn't had any side effects since his surgery, but may have to go back in in December for a double valve repair. He had a rare congenital heart defect that was repaired in November of 2004 with no side effects thank goodness. It is just puzzling, everyone is different. I will keep you posted on what the Dr says, thank you so much for your help.
