Hi:
Husband Ed had an aortic valve replacement and double bypass yesterday morning. Last night he was heavily sedated, but knew I was there as he kept sqeezing my hand. Surgeon said everything went very well and his nurse in ICU said things were according to plan. Apparently, he may go to a cardiac unit today. We're glad its's over and will report more, but right now he look like ****.

Thanks for all the sharing everyone does. Couldn't have made it without you all. I now understand why you would prefer to do this only once if possible.

Tis an eye opener isn't it? Glad to hear things are going well thus far. Don't be shocked or upset if there are bumps in the road. Most people have a couple, it comes with the territory. ;)

Moving this thread to post surgery.

Thanks for the report. I just dropped in this morning just to check for news on our folks. Your's was the first post I came to and am hoping the others are good as well. I'm glad it's over for you as well. Today may be a better day for you. Take care of yourself too as we know this takes a toll on the family as well as the patient. God Bless.

Lin, I'm so glad that the surgery went well and it's all over. Now the waiting and sometimes that's the hardest. But tell Ed it does get better. It just takes time and a lot of patience. You take care of yourself too.

Lin,
I'm glad the surgery was successful and Ed is on the road to recovery. Try to get some rest when you can; you will need it once you get him home.

Congrats to Ed, and thanks for taking the time to post.

My husband was really traumatized by how I looked post-op, even tho a little nun had told him it wasn't going to be pretty.

Thanks again for all your support. Ed was moved yesterday from ICU to a regular room in cardiology. Wow, what a comedown. Nancy, was right you really need a family member or friend to be with you as much as possible. The nursing staff here is so short or busy I don't know which one. He needs someone just to get him a glass of ice water when he needs it or put a cool cloth on his forehead. (Unless you ring the bell there is no one around). He was up sitting in a chair last night and apparently he will be up walking today. He's still on morphine every 4 hours, but his colour is very good. He's keeping me amused by every so often "saying things that are completely off the wall" and make no sense what so ever. Anyway, we're both relieved it's over. He went tissue, but I now see how mechanical would be quite attractive in order not to have a repeat performance.

Lin :)

I hope things continue to go well for him. The first few days can be the roughest. Write down the off-the-wall things he says. You'll get a good chuckle from them later on.

I had my aorta valve replaced 5 weeks ago. My wife has never seemed more beautiful to me after experiencing her loving care in the hospital. I am not referring to simple gratitude (which is immense in itself) but seeing all that was done with such a willing and concerned spirit. Now I find myself watching my wife just make breakfast and understand what a gift I have been given through her life. I bet your husband will be saying the same thing in a few days!

Yep, my wife was an angel. She stayed with me 24/7 for the first 4 days...I just couldn't do much on my own without alot of pain..Wife said I said some weird off the wall stuff to. That was on Percoset....I remember drifting on and waking up talking.
