View Full Version : A silly question about hair growth

I've been reading the forums for several weeks now. My wife found the site after my AVR surgery on August 11 and found great comfort in reading the postings during my recuperative period. Thanks to all of you for your wonderful forums and stories. My question is this: has anyone else noticed an increase in hair growth on their head, arms, and legs after surgery? I am about five weeks post surgery and have been delighted to see some fuzz growing on formerly bare areas on my head and lots of new hair on my legs and arms. I hope it keeps up. Anyone got any idea what might cause this? :D

Are you on any new meds? Other than that, the only thing I could think of is increased circulation from having your heart fixed.

This is a first. Now all the guys, maybe a few gals, are going back to their dr and ask where their new hair is. Good for you. Hope it continues.

Gee, my hair seemed to be falling out and felt greasy for the initial few weeks. Now at 9 weeks, I'm back to relative normality.

I forgot to mention that I'm 62, so puberty may not be the answer. It would be nice if the bald areas filled in--I'm hoping.

Well that sounds like a really good thing to look forward to!! I'm 51 and my hormones (or ciruculation?) are messing with my hair thickness. I would love to awaken from my run-in with the infamous "truck" and find thickening hair on the other side of the mountain. I wonder about dry skin and clarity of vision as well. Or any other benefit -- along with the most amazing one, of course -- LIFE!!
Please list the drugs you are on, just in case!! :D

Hey Paul W
You must be one of the lucky ones. Since my surgery and being on Coumadin I have noticed that my hair (what little I did have on top) has stopped growing. Let me know your secret/ :D

LOL!
Great response, Bob H ... too bad you weren't correct ;).
Paul,
Are you, by chance, on steroids at all for any issues surrounding the surgery? If so, it is _possible_ that the steroids are aiding in that hair growth spurt for you. I know when I was on them, they "spiked" my appetite...and gave it a sense of humor, as well....heh.

Paul:
Are you taking any fatty acid or Vitamin E supplements? Sometimes they can boost hair production.

I think you're probably alone in this one; my hair didn't start growing well or regain any life/body for just about 6 months post op.
You didn't get a chimp valve, did ya???? :D

Doubt if it is the drugs. I'm on Motrin 400mg 4X per day for pericarditis and Atenolol. No steroids at all. I have also noticed that the dry flaky skin on my feet is gone and my feet are warm. :) My heart was quite enlarged and damaged before my excellent internist discovered my seriously leaky valve, so increased circulation could be the answer.

Oh I forgot to mention that my wife makes me take a multivitamin (first time in my life) called Central Vite Select. I don't think it's anything special.

A few years ago I went to hear a cardio. doctor talk. She mention that a lot of men think that they don't grow hair on their feet and lower legs because their socks rub on their leg. It's due to poor circulation. She said that it takes a lot of oxgen for hair to grow. That night we all went home and check our feet and toes to see it we had hair growing on them.
