Today he came off the ventilator at 6 am and sat up in the chair briefly-HOORAY!! It's great to see that smile again. He keeps asking if anyone got the license plate of the truck that ran him over. When I talked with Dr Starr today he said that George was doing great. Please continue to pray that he will learn to stop being so brave and use the pain med that they have given him as well as get the rest that he needs. This is very hard for him as he is a very light sleeper. Thanks again sooo much for your prayers during this time. Good night.

Great news! May he get ever better and better! (Do hospitals allow patients to wear earplugs? They're a godsend for light sleepers.)

Glad things are going so well. As far as the meds go, maybe it isn't bravery but maybe he just doesn't like the feeling of being doped up. I took very few pain meds despite pain because I didn't like being brain foggy.
Please give him my best. Take care of yourself too.

Thanks for posting. It seems that no one ever gets that license plate....probably because it hits you so fast and then backs over you a few times when you're down.
Please give George our best.....no martyrdom....use the pills if you need them.
Remember the vr. motto.....WALK, WALK, WALK, BREATHE, BREATHE, BREATHE, NAP, NAP, LOTS OF NAP.
Best wishes.

Thanks for updating us on George. He sounds like he's coming right along.
George, bear it if you must; if you can't, there's a pill with your name on it. Sorry about the truck.

It's almost impossible to sleep for more than a few hours at a time after surgery. However, if he's not sleeping due to pain, he should be taking the pain medication. Pain does not help the body recover; it only serves to slow it down.
I'm glad George is up and moving! He'll be home before you know it! :)

Congrats to George.
You get some rest too - he'll need quite a bit of help the first few days home.

Wonderful to hear that George is up and doing so well. I was looking at his signature and am so impressed. I do hope he will have a smooth recovery and will take the pain meds if he needs them. Andrew often had to be encouraged to use his pim button and it really helped.
Looking forward to hearing more good news.

It's good to hear that George is doing good. As for the pain meds, I too did not want to take them, I agree with Gina, it made my brain foggy, but I also agree with Mary, if you are in pain it does not help you heal. In retrospect, I should have taken the percoset in the hospital so that I could use that blasted breathing gismo more efficiently. I was afraid if I took a deep breath it would hurt. I could not take sleeping pills as they gave me a headach when I woke up.
Speedy recovery George!

Since I'm new Here, I don't know you yet George. Looks like you've had more than your fair share of OP's.I've only been thru it once and I know I have problems with feeling out of Control while on the pain meds....I'll tell you what tho, I finally gave in, told everyone I was sorry if I said or did anything that offended them while medicated and just took the suckers! So TAKE YOUR PAIN MEDS and get some rest!!!!......lol.
Best of luck and Speedy Recovery!

George,
I hope your recovery continues to go very well! :). If you were only hit by 1 truck, you did great. I could not write down the license plate numbers fast enough. I was hit by a fleet of Mack trucks ;) . The pain will eventually go away, honest it does.

Way to go George!!! Just a note - if he doesnt like those pain meds they are giving him - ask for something different! Gary is a big guy - 280 lbs and the percosets only lasted 2 hours - cant take them more than every 4 so they started giving him something else - but I cant remember the name!!!! Maybe someone knows what it is - if I hear it I will know it. They gave it to him via his heplock and said it was a really strong advil or tylenol or aspirin - cant remember which as those days were a blur. - but not only did it work - he didnt feel dopey and could stretch longer before requesting the percosets.
George really needs something because the pain gets worse before it gets better and in order to cough productively he needs his meds!!
We are 19 days post op and Gary is still taking the percosets every 4 hours (at nite he is going 6).
Take care and glad to hear the good news!!
Best wishes for a speedy uneventful recovery

Was it Torinol or something close to that? Andrew changed to that as the Morphine was possibly giving him a headache.

It was probably Toradol or ?Tramadol. Tramadol seems to work a little better for me but of course not everyone reacts the same way and I would have to look it up to see if it can even be given that route.
I'm so glad to hear he is doing well and hope his recovery goes smoothly.

George I'm so glad that you are doing better. It seems to take a while to sleep through the night. Pain pills didn't help me very much either, but you do need your rest. It's so hard to rest in the hospital, so noisy and then they come in at 3:00 a.m. to take x-rays! Bummer. Take it easy and good wishes for a fast recovery. Prayers are still coming your way.

I think Toradol. My writing is a little sloppy in my journal. :p

I had one shot of Toradol when I had afib and my heart and lungs were rubbing against the drainage tube in my chest. It can give some older folks hallucinations, but it was a wonder drug for me.
I had tramadol when I left the hospital. It is a pill, and worked very well for me. It doesn't seem to have the constipating effect discussed about percocettes and others.
I completely agree with what Mary said about pain. It interferes with recovery. Gutting it out is not macho, just unnecessary.
Best wishes,
