Hi, it has been a while since I posted. Well a couple of weeks. But I wanted to touch base with anyone that might know about this...
My Mother is doing ok. However, she still does not have the will to eat. She did see her surgeon yesterday. Doctor Maggs.- He is terrific. He told us to be patient. ''Your Mother had OHS just 7 weeks ago.
It seems like with my Mother, a different week, a different issue. Last week, it was swelling in one of her legs. This week, she is constantly going to the bathroom. I don't want to get gross about it. But if you caught on, you know what I mean.
She has her dinner and then boom- it starts and it goes on for hours. I have been going to sleep very late because of it.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to stop this. My Mother is on a prescription for it already and Imodium advanced isn't helping either.
Funny, she has been home for 3 weeks and nothing like this happened the first 2.

My brother (who hasn't had any heart surgery) has this every day. His dr rxed Cholestin - that's a powder he mixes in o.juice and takes it every morning about 10 a.m.. It doesn't seem to help. He didn't used to have this, but I believe it might be because of the combination of drugs he takes - some of it not heart related. Only thing I might suggest is that you ask her dr if it might be her meds. Can't blame her for not wanting to eat if this is the result. Please give her a hug for me. Blessins......

Milton-
Have they done a culture on your mother's stool? There is a hospital borne diarrhea which some can get called, for short, c. diff. It is a really bad diarrhea and needs special medications to get over. A culture will show if she has this.
Joe got it and it took about 3 months for it to finally subside. He was on all kinds of prescriptions and had to see a gastro man to finish it off.
It can really debilitate someone and cause dehydration, not to mention colitis.

My Mother is ok. But I realized the diarrhea problem might be from the PREVACID she is taking. She takes it in the morning and then soon after, it starts. She has no symptoms of Chrones disease or colitis. Thank God! :o

Milton:
One of the side effects of Prevacid, and I think most similar meds, is diarrhea or soft stools.
I took Prevacid for about 5 months a number of years ago, and I had that side effect, but it wasn't diarrhea. One day I decided to stop the Prevacid. I had no more gastric reflux and the side effects went away.
Depending on your mother's age, Prevacid may be too strong for her. Have you asked your mom's doctor if the Prevacid could be adversely affecting her?

Milton, I echo Nancy's advice, an infectious diahrrea may be what's going on here and you would want that treated as soon as possible. Best wishes to her and you. Barbara

My Mother did call her doctor today. Although she had to leave a message, his assistant called her back. He repeated what the doctor said which was. To discontinue taking the Prevacid and see how it goes for a few days. Tomorrow will be day one. I will keep you posted. Thanks for the advice!

Funny how different meds work on different people. I was on Prevacid five weeks, and it didn't affect my intestinal tract one way or another.
I'm glad your mother called, and I hope stopping the Prevacid helps her problem. :)

Mary:
Prevacid alters digestion of food because it blocks acid production in the stomach. Hence the side effect of diarrhea -- or constipation (according to one website I found).
