I am considering having my mitral valve replacement done in Cleveland, but I live in Nashville. How soon after surgery could you travel? Distance? Mode of transportation. I have had OH surgery before to repair the valve and how soon I can get home is a big part of my decisionmaking. :)

You should be able to ask the doctor that now. Let him/her know what you want to do and how you'll travel. It'll be an estimate based on your recovery and surgery method. I flew an hour and my wife drove me for 4 hours at two weeks; probably could have done it sooner. Keep your pillow handy! The seatbelt shoulder strap can be irritating.....

Good Luck!

Thanks for the info. I was thinking I could ride after the first five days. Guess I am being optimistic.

If your flying, no problem. If your driving, it would be very hard on you for that amount of time.

Thanks. Maybe you or someone moved my thread? to another site. I had pulled up support to ask how to start a thread. Lo and behold, I had started a thread under the support section. Guess I will figure all of this out eventually. Your info is helpful. It seems I would have to fly back from the Cleveland Clinic to Nashville as soon as they discharge me. I will confirm this with Cleveland Clinic when they call to give me the second opinion I requested. I am amazed by this website and all of the information on it. I had my first OHS and asked no questions. I am trying to be more in charge and knowledgeable about my choices this time around.

Cleveland Clinic has a "Guest House" on the campus, about 3 blocks away from the Hospital. When I was there last fall, I believe the rate was around $100/day. They also have a shuttle from one place to another. The complex even has/had a great deli next door with fantastic sandwiches & desserts!

Good Luck.

Hi Hiker, yes I moved your thread out of support as it's for operation of all the forums and questions for the webmaster. Not a big deal, if something gets put somewhere where it shouldn't be, I'll put it where I think it should be.

I fully understand your sentiments about wanting to know all after your first surgery! That's the very same reason I came here in 2001. My first, I had no opportunity to ask anything since it was emergency surgery and one heck of a humbling experience. I wanted to know a whole lot more for my second time around and hoped that it might help me deal with the feelings from the first. ;)
