what do you think about the new info on statins? Where, if you take one while having a heart attack, it will help save your life? Do you think this is possible with a STATIN?

 uhuh..no statin will ever cross these lips in this lifetime..nope, not believing nor doing. Sales probably dropped soooo..lets say it prevents cancer(they did say that), and prevents heart attacks... bottom line looks bad thats all. (just my opinion)..love Yaps

Went to the cardiologist last month; talked to her about statins because I've been having a problem with cholesterol levels that haven't responded completely to niaspan and diet and exercise. She said that they should put statins in the water supply - they're that good.

I really didn't want to take them, but she convinced me that a small dose with the niaspan would be good for me and wouldn't cause side effects.

Hm-m-m . . .

Georgia, my cardiologist feels about the same way. He was all excited one day when he said his cholesterol stays good now regardless of his diet. I know how this guy eats and it isn't exactly heart healthy.

I'm like Yaps though. I feel better off of them and have never had elevated cholesterol anyway. I was put on them to perhaps retard the calcification process of my aortic valve and CVD.

me, too, to all the above. It's no secret how I feel. But since this came out the other day and some of us are sposed to or maybe should be on statins, we might check out how others feel about it. So far looks like statins lose.

As for me, I'd rather be able to walk.

I have always found it interesting that, when you hear all the commercials for cholesterol lowering drugs, they all state: "this drug has not been proven to reduce the risk of heart disease". Well, duh, then what is the point?

I posted the above on another thread but thought it belonged here as well.

oops - guess I missed that one.

Nope - it was actually a thread about Heart CT scans. Just got on to a discussion of statin drugs.

Well, everybody knows how I feel about statins...

Don't quite understand the reaction against Statins. Here's some quotes from a book, "Heart of the Matter" by Peter Salgo. "Some pills are good for you, but statins are great for you. They will keep you alive"
"The statins are a group of drugs that can lower your cholesterol dramatically. They are relatively new, but you've already heard of them. As good as these drugs are, we have just scratched the surface of their potential benefits. We don't use them enough and not enough people are using them."
"If you want to live longer you will start taking a statin right now, even if your doctor tells you your heart disease risk is low. What I'm offering is revolutionary advice. It is controversial. It is not the recommendation of the politically correct medical establishment. But it will be."
If you wait for the FDA and organized medicine to save your life, you may die waiting."

because I took them for a couple of months about 2 years ago. Had leg cramps so bad I could not walk. Not interested in living longer if I can't do anything.

Ditto. My shoulders hurt so bad and so did my legs and hips. I began to feel like I would soon need a cane. I feel much better without a statin.

Bill, I can't believe you missed all our discussions on statins. We've been talking about them for 2-3 yrs. Lipitor nearly crippled me and has probably left permanent disability in my muscles. My cardio said I am one of those 'who can't take statins'. Quite a few of us in VR just can't take them because of this, even tho they lower the cholesterol so very well.

My wife would echo all these comments except Bill's. (no offense intended Bill)
When an extremely active woman couldn't hardly stand up, let alone do anything, it was time to quit that stuff.
She of course is still fighting the cholesterol issue, but has gained a lot of ground without statins.
This is with non-statin drugs, diet and exercise.
These doctors prescribe statins and tell you to exercise as well.
If you can't hardly walk that is pretty hard to do.
In her case it is a genetic thing and mine is not.
I just had all the blood work done and mine is perfect and I never diet or watch what I eat. Just plain lucky I guess.
Now we have two different diets, her healthy diet and for me my meat loaf diet. :D

I take Lipitor with little problem. I do get foot cramping every oncein a while, but nothing that is inhibiting. I think that for those of us who don't experience the painful side-effects, it's a great drug. But I do know several people who had to stop because of all the issues you've all described.

The last tidbit I heard was that they were looking into whether statins inhibited the growth of cancer cells. They recommended that no one take them just for that, but that it might be an added benefit. I haven't heard anythng since, so it might be a bunch of whooey.

We do have a lot of friends who have been taking stains for years, and all with little or no side effects, and that's great for them.
I just get a little ticked at some of these doctors, who try to force these things down your throat, regardless of the effects you might be experiencing.
That is simply about dollars as far as I'm concerned.
I take a drug called Proscar for a prostate condition.
This drug is known to promote hair growth as wel(and it does).
A report not too long ago on TV indicated maybe everyone who was experiencing hair loss should take this drug.
That struck me as absolutely ridiculous.
Again it struck me as nothing more than big dollars for the drug companies.

My Doc wanted to put me on them also, but I said no way. My cholesterol is so low to begin with I was worried about my brain and other organs that need fat to function properly.
