Hi,

First of all I should say that I am pretty dumb when it comes to the technical side of computers...I just turn it on and hope that it works so this problem might just be mine and have a very simple solution but I can't find it...

My computer and the chatroom are not getting along. My computer fails, I guess, to load the chatroom completely. When I chat the only thing I can read is the very most recent sentence someone has written but if I don't hurry it disappears very quickly. The rest of the convo is "missing", or at least my computer fails to load the thing properly. Also, the thing is very very slow at times. Any thoughts and tips? Any settings that I have failed to set properly? I have an iMac with a modem. I use ME for Mac (Netscape does not work at all).

I think the chatroom is great btw :)!

Jessica,

I believe it must be your computer, because this chatroom loads easy. First you register with a name and type in the password. Next time all you have to type is the password, and click on "chat", and VOILA!!
Hope it'll work for you soon, because it is fun!

I have no experience whatsoever with Apple's products. The only thing I can think of is to make sure you have the latest version of Internet Explorer loaded.

I have the latest version of ME, and I have pestered the mac support people until they gave up and decided it was chat software causing it... Had to wait for 4 days until they came up with that answer
Mac is great when it works and not so great when it doesn't so I guess I will have to soldier along for the time being...

I'll be joining the ranks of the PC-users next month when I'll be discarding the i-mac for a new laptop, maybe it will get better when I do...

Christina, chat I can do, and I like to alot, but I have to have pretty good memory (which I don't but that's another story) to follow the conversation and all that is said with the computer causing me these problems... Have had little problems with other chatrooms and my computer but I guess there is a first time for everything...

Thanks anyway :D

Dyr Jessica:

Sorry to hear you're letting your iMac go! Is it a laptop or desktop iMac? If it's an iBook would you sell it to me?

I have been a Mac user (for graphic design) for over 10 yrs and wouldn't think of converting to a "PeeSea" for the graphics business. I'm really looking forward to getting one of Apple's new iMac's with CD/DVD burner this year.

I do believe however, that some applications (software) are just meant for the PC and are not very functional on the Mac OS, in spite of the Internet. As far as the Chatroom goes, I have ventured there one or two times, but didn't stay long. The interface seemed to work okay on my iMac (older model 233 MHz, G3), but I rarely use chats anyway.

I use Explorer too. Occasionally I will launch Netscape, but it is just too slow.

How are YOU feeling? Run any marathons yet? Yust kidding. My first 5K this year is April 27 in the Swedish Stomp in Bishop Hill, IL:

No, no marathons just yet but I did manage to somewhat hobble/run/walk/run very quickly to catch a train the other day :D, which is cause for joy I guess! Ran into my much appreciated cardiologist a few days ago and all he could say but boy, do you look like you are feeling better or what?! Could only agree with him...

I am recovering well now, the dreaded prednisone (which gave me, or triggered perhaps) glaucoma and a painful disorder of the left optic nerve :( had been decreased below 10 mg per day now and the immuno stuff is just humming along...

I have been a happy mac-user too ever since I found that it was the external disk-reader that was causing it to bomb out every day and I disconnected it... You rarely have to worry about viruses and other weird stuff since the MacOS as a system is pretty stabile. I may even keep the mac and just get a laptop too... The iMac I have is a stationery one, a G3, seems a dab short on memory but I'll get into it if I decide to keep it.

Thanks for the link -- fascinating to see and read :). My grandfather is a devoted genealogist, has traced people back to the 14th century I think and has a microfiche-reader at home to work as much as he can! I once travelled in Minnesota and found many of the people to be "more" Swedish than myself :).

Are you in training for the marathon already? Nonetheless I wish you the very best of luck already in training :D!

I do need Swedish language help. When and how do we start? Online dictionary's just don't cover it well. :( Uff da.

Does you grandfather use the Internet for his geneology or have an e-mail address. My older brother has extensively researched our Swedish roots and is always looking to go deeper. He's a college professor near here and I'm sure would enjoy contacting your grandpop.

Glad you're doing well.

Thanks.

p.s. sounds like your external disk reader could be the culprit. Apple did a number on us when they discontinued standard floppy drives from their new machines. They were pretty much right predicting little use of the drive. Ihave an ext. Zip drive that works great.

Sorry, my grandfather is a vocal opponent to computers, has very poor eye sight so the computer route is not one he is likely to travel at age 84.

I don't know much about genealogy, more than some bits here ant there. However, if I can be of help I would.

Has your brother checked out ? They have an English version which is to be updated further with time. I noticed when I did a quick search of the net that many of the sites only offer info in Swedish but if your brother tells me what type of info he is after I could surf around and see what I find. If you want me to that is :). You wouldn't impose on my time as I seem to have plenty still :).

About the language stuff, I'll send you my email address!

hi jessica and perry!
i too, am a mac user and am about to get rid of my (very old, slow and low on memory) powerbook g3 for that beautiful new i mac g4!
i am finding the same thing... can't seem to fully get into the chat room either. the other day i actually caught a glimpse of the dialogue but it disappeared as quickly as it came on. i do think it's my computer. i often find i can't open up emails that joey sends me and it can get very frustrating.
any help would be much appreciated. maybe i'll have more luck with the new one.
hope you're both well,
sylvia

Yea, that's what I experience also! I have a G3 too but have never experienced this problem in other chatrooms... Oh well, like you said maybe with a newer computer getting into it will be easier. If you get the G4 soon, would you please tell me how you find it working?

Good for you, Sylvia...another Mac user!

Apple's free DVD (iDVD), MP3 (iTunes), Movies (iMovie) and Photo (iPhoto) software on every new iMac is an incredible step for mankind!

Don't you just hate it when that happens?! You decide to do something and whamo! you get stuck somewhere in between....

I'm going computer shopping soon too but I'll hold off and let you get the G4 first! Then you can report to me what you think and I can decide on what to get! If you don't mind that is :)!

Doing really well myself. Hope you are too! Enjoy your vacation!

hey folks!
i'm on my newly, partially set up , new imac and guess what???? i'm still having trouble getting onto the chat rooms. i peeked in yesterday and i actually got to see who had been in them, but no dialogue and whatever i glimpsed at was off the screen whithin seconds. so... i'm having my friend , my "mac guru" come over and he'll check it out. will report any progress as soon as i can.
hope you're all doing well. it's good to be back (although vacation in nevis was a dream!) and in touch with everyone here.
stay well,
sylvia

I am now a wee bit tempted then to conclude that the problem with the chatroom is the mac and chatroom software not mixing well. Good to know that it's not me alone that's having the problem ;).
I still haven't decided if I am to be mac-faithful or go for a Dell...

Nice to see you back and if you do not mind me asking, what happened with your vacation?

All my best,

/Jessica :D

hi jessica!
our vacation was wonderful, except the traveling is really horrendous these days. they searched every piece of luggage we had and the lines were so poorly organized coming back from the caribbean (no lines, just cattle shoving each other!!). also, while away, too much sun, food, salt, and wine must have been the culprit (i hope, since we can rule out the stress factor) and had joey skipping beats for a few days there (despite his being on amiodarone). it's a good thing he took coumadin with him just incase. the island we were on is very remote and i don't think they have the medical facilities or certain meds, unfortunately, if we had needed them. thank God the skips stopped after a few days and he's now off the coumadin and fine.
all in all, the week was great, but it's always nice to come back home (our own bed, the dog, the house/home).

i'll let you know if i figure out what this whole problem with the chat room is. i really do hope it's not the mac!! i'm not switching.
i hope you're doing well,
sylvia
